Reducing Microbial Failures in Commercial Cannabis: Start with the Process

Repeated microbial failures rarely have one cause. The useful approach is to map where contamination can enter, multiply or be carried forward—from cultivation through drying, trimming and packaging.

Separate source control from final-product testing

Testing tells you whether a batch met a specification. It does not explain where contamination came from. Use environmental and process data to identify recurring pathways before the next batch reaches finished-product testing.

Start with room and equipment sanitation

Remove soils before disinfection, use the correct concentration and contact time, and include high-touch and hard-to-access areas. Trend verification data such as ATP results where appropriate.

Control moisture and airflow

High humidity, condensation, stagnant air and uneven drying can create conditions that support microbial growth. Treat drying-room loading, air movement and environmental control as part of the QA system rather than a separate facilities issue.

Reduce unnecessary handling

Every transfer, tote, cart, glove change and equipment contact is an opportunity to add contamination. Simplify the material path and standardize cleaning between lots.

Investigate trends, not isolated events

Compare failures by room, cultivar, harvest date, crew, drying location and processing line. Patterns are more useful than treating each failed result as an unrelated incident.
