ATP Testing in Cannabis Facilities: How to Verify Cleaning Consistency
Cleaning programs are difficult to improve when the only feedback is visual. A surface can look clean and still carry organic residue. ATP testing gives cultivation and QA teams a fast way to check whether a cleaning process is being executed consistently.
What ATP testing measures
ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate, a molecule found in living cells and organic material. A handheld ATP meter measures light produced by a swab reaction and reports a relative light unit (RLU) value. Lower readings generally indicate less biological or organic residue on the tested surface.
What ATP testing does not tell you
An ATP result is not a pathogen identification test. It does not tell you whether HLVd, Botrytis, Aspergillus or another specific organism is present. It is best used as a rapid cleanliness-verification tool alongside the facility's microbiological and plant-health testing program.
Build a baseline before setting limits
Do not copy another facility's RLU target without context. Swab the same representative surfaces repeatedly using the same meter, swab type and method. Establish a baseline for each area, then use the data to define practical internal thresholds.
Choose repeatable sampling points
- Benches and work tables
- Door handles and high-touch points
- Scissors and hand tools
- Cart handles and wheels
- Drain-adjacent surfaces
- Packaging or post-harvest contact surfaces
The value comes from trending the same points over time, not randomly swabbing a different surface each day.
Use failures to improve the process
If a location repeatedly misses its internal target, investigate the cleaning sequence, soil load, product dilution, contact time, tool choice and staff training. ATP is most useful when it identifies a process problem that can be corrected.
