Rolling Benches vs Vertical Grow Racks for Commercial Cannabis
Rolling benches and vertical grow racks solve different facility problems. The right choice depends on ceiling height, environmental capacity, lighting strategy, irrigation, labour access and the economics of production area.
Rolling benches prioritize horizontal access
Single-level rolling benches increase canopy coverage while retaining relatively straightforward worker access, lighting layout and environmental management.
Vertical racks multiply canopy area
Multi-tier systems can increase production area within the same floor footprint, but they also multiply lighting, irrigation, airflow and service requirements inside the same room volume.
HVAC capacity becomes more important
More canopy generally means more transpiration and heat load. Evaluate dehumidification, cooling and air movement before assuming that extra tiers translate directly into proportional production.
Labour access affects the design
Consider plant work, inspection, IPM, harvest, cleaning and emergency access at every tier. Equipment that is difficult to reach can add labour and reduce compliance with SOPs.
Irrigation distribution must remain consistent
Pressure, drainage, line routing and service access become more complex as tiers are added. The irrigation design should be planned with the rack system rather than added afterward.
Compare production economics, not plants per room
Model capital cost, lighting power, HVAC, labour, crop turns and expected sellable output. Higher plant density is only useful when the rest of the facility can support it.
