PPE and Personnel Entry Protocols for Commercial Cannabis Facilities

People are one of the most frequent movement pathways in a cultivation facility. A personnel-entry protocol should reduce the chance that footwear, clothing, hands, tools or personal items carry contamination into cleaner production zones.

Define clean and higher-risk zones

Map the facility so staff know where street clothing ends, where production PPE begins and where additional changes are required. Mother and propagation areas often justify stricter controls because contamination introduced there can move downstream through many plants.

Standardize entry sequence

  1. Remove or secure personal items that are not required in production.
  2. Perform hand hygiene according to the facility SOP.
  3. Put on designated garments, hair covering and beard covering where required.
  4. Change or cover footwear according to the zone protocol.
  5. Put on gloves at the correct point in the entry sequence.
  6. Bring only clean or approved tools into the room.

Gloves do not replace hand hygiene

Gloves can become contaminated like bare hands. Define when gloves must be changed, particularly after touching phones, door hardware, waste, floor-level items or plants from a different zone.

Control movement direction

Where practical, schedule work from cleaner or more sensitive areas toward higher-risk areas. Avoid returning to propagation or mother stock after working in areas with known pest, disease or sanitation issues unless the re-entry protocol is completed.

Make compliance easy

Place PPE, waste bins, signage, hand-hygiene supplies and footwear controls where the decision happens. A protocol that requires staff to search for supplies will eventually be skipped.
