Commercial Pre-Roll Automation: What to Evaluate Before Buying a Machine

A pre-roll machine does not operate in isolation. Grinding, material conditioning, cone or paper supply, weighing, finishing, quality control and packaging all determine the actual output of the line.

Define the product format first

Specify finished weight, paper or cone format, diameter, length and tolerance. A system that excels at one format may require change parts or different setup for another.

Control the input material

Grind size, moisture, density and consistency influence fill behaviour. If the upstream grinder produces variable material, the pre-roll machine may appear inconsistent even when the dosing system is working correctly.

Measure accepted units per hour

Count finished units that pass QC, not only machine cycles. Include rejects, rework, refilling hoppers and downstream finishing.

Include labour around the machine

Determine how many people are required to feed materials, load cones, weigh, inspect, finish and package. Automation is valuable when the total labour per accepted unit falls.

Check changeover and cleaning time

Different SKUs, infused products and allergen/contamination controls can increase cleaning and setup time. Ask how quickly contact parts can be accessed and verified clean.

Trial your own material

Run representative flower and the actual paper format before finalizing a purchase whenever possible.
