Commercial Cannabis Facility Flow: Designing People, Material and Waste Movement

Facility layout affects labour and biosecurity every day. When clean materials, waste, harvested plants, staff and shared equipment repeatedly cross paths, the building creates operational risk that SOPs must constantly fight.

Map the major flows separately

Draw routes for people, incoming materials, plants, tools, harvested product, waste and maintenance. Problems often become obvious when these paths are placed on one plan.

Prefer clean-to-dirty progression

Where possible, arrange movement so staff and materials move from cleaner or more sensitive areas toward higher-risk processes rather than repeatedly reversing direction.

Separate receiving from production

Incoming pallets, cardboard, outside tools and service personnel can introduce dirt and pests. Create a receiving and staging process before materials move deeper into production.

Design sanitation into transition points

Provide enough physical space for hand hygiene, PPE changes, footwear controls, tool cleaning and cart decontamination at the places where zones actually change.

Give waste a deliberate route

Plant waste, used media and dirty packaging should not travel back through clean production routes if another path is available. Waste accumulation areas also need cleaning and pest-control consideration.

Consider maintenance access

HVAC, irrigation, electrical and lighting equipment require service. Design access so technicians do not have to move dirty tools through sensitive crop zones unnecessarily.
