Footbaths and Sticky Mats in Cannabis Biosecurity: Where They Help—and Where They Don’t
Footbaths and sticky mats are visible biosecurity controls, but their value depends on where they are placed and how they are maintained. They should support a broader footwear and personnel-flow program rather than substitute for one.
Sticky mats remove loose particulate
Adhesive mats can help remove dust and loose debris from wheels and footwear at transition points. Replace sheets when loading reduces tack and keep the surrounding floor clean so the mat does not immediately become re-contaminated.
Footbaths require maintained chemistry
A disinfectant footbath only performs as intended when the current product label permits that use and the solution is maintained at the correct concentration and contact conditions. Organic loading and visible soil can reduce performance.
Scrape and clean first
If footwear carries mud, coco, plant debris or other soil, remove that material before the disinfection step. A heavily contaminated boot placed briefly into a dirty footbath is not a robust control.
Location matters
Place controls at real zone boundaries where staff and carts must pass, not where they are easiest to install. Avoid routes that let people bypass the control.
Assign footwear where possible
Dedicated room or zone footwear can reduce reliance on repeated decontamination. The most effective design often combines dedicated footwear, sticky mats or cleaning points, and a clear entry/exit sequence.
